Daf Yomi - Megillah 18 - Food for Thought

1. How could the Shemoneh Esrei have been forgotten? (Ben Yehoyada)

2. What should one do if he can’t even read the words ha’achashtranim bnei haramachim in Hebrew? (Chashukei Chemed)

3. Is the obligation of reading Parshas Zochor from a Sefer Torah a biblical one or is it only rabbinic? (Eshkol, Minchas Chinuch, Pnei Yehoshua, Sfas Emes)

4. Where in Shemoneh Esrei should one remember about Amalek? (Magen Avraham, Sdei Chemed)

5. Why doesn’t the Rif rule according to Rav and Shmuel that one can fulfill his obligation of reading the Megillah if it is written in Greek and he understands it? (Rishonim)

Thanks for the B"Y. He says: the S"E was not forgotten, the reason for the order was forgotten.

I would like to suggest why the numbers 7, 8 and 9 were significant and used to interrupt the shemonah esrei and not other numbers. Perhaps we can suggest that the Anshei Knesses HaGedolah set up the shemona esrei using svora, psukim and numbers for each of the brochos. However, they were forgotten. Shimon Hapakuli came and set them up again but he did not remember everything. He remembered all the svoras, psukim and some numbers. However, even Shimon Hapakuli forgot the reason for the numbers for the other brochos. He only remembered why 7 8 and 9 were used for those brochos.

In the brocha of v'chal hachayim, the M"A says that we should have in mind Amalek, specifically by v'kervanu L'SHIMCHA HAGAODOL, since the sheim is not complete until Amalek is wiped out.

targum was also forgotten. regarding Amalek, how can we say in bircas krias shema hu kayam ushmo kayam vichiso nachon, if Amalek hasn't been wiped out? Is there a difference between shaleim and kayam?

1)they forgot the basis for the order
2)We learn out from here that your are chayav to lein every word
3)It is a doraisah it says Zochor is bpeh,Minchas chinuch brings some who say it is a drabanon Pnei Yeshouah Explains how they would learn our gemurah
5)Im guessing because today no one knows the greek the gemurah is refering too and this was alredy true in the times of the rishonim
